DNS (domain name system) A server translates domain names that you enter into a browser (such as litbyte.com) to the public IP address that your device requires to communicate with that site.

Then your ISP sets a DNS server automatically when your smartphone or router is connected to the internet, but you are not required to use it. There are many reasons you might want to try other alternatives (we try to answer some of the internet users’ questions. Why Use a Different DNS Server? See the answers follow this article to the end), but privacy and speed are two benefits that you can get from changing DNS Servers.

Fast and Best Free DNS

The fastest DNS servers include Google, Quad9, OpenDNS, Cloudflare, CleanBrowsing, Verisign, Alternative DNS, and AdGuard DNS.

The following is a reference to the list of the fastest DNS servers that we summarized from various sources:

Provider Primary DNS Secondary DNS
Google 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
Quad9 9.9.9.9 149.112.112.112
OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220
Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1
CleanBrowsing 185.228.168.9 185.228.169.9
Verisign 64.6.64.6 64.6.65.6
Alternate DNS 198.101.242.72 23.253.163.53
DNS AdGuard 176.103.130.130 176.103.130.131
Comodo Secure DNS 8.26.56.26 8.20.247.20

The primary DNS server can be called the main DNS server, and a secondary DNS server can be called an alternative DNS server. Primary and secondary DNS Servers can be “combined and matched” from different providers to protect you if the provider of the main provider has a problem.

The Fastest, Free & Public Best DNS Server

Below are more details about the fastest, free, and best DNS server that you can use.

If you are unsure, use the IPv4 DNS server that is registered for the provider. IPv6 is an IP address that includes an IPv6 IP address using a colon (::).

1.Google Public DNS

Google Public DNS records complete IP address information from search devices for about 24 to 48 hours for troubleshooting and diagnostic purposes. ‘Permanent’ logs drop personally identifiable information and reduce location details to city level; Logs will be deleted after two weeks.

  • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
  • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

Google also offers an IPv6 version:

  • DNS Primary: 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8888
  • Secondary DNS: 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8844

Google can reach fast speeds with their public DNS servers because they are hosted in data centers around the world, which means that when you try to access web pages using the IP address above, you are directed to the server closest to you.

2.Quad9

Quad9 has the fastest, public, and free DNS servers that protect your computer and other devices from cyber threats immediately and automatically block access to unsafe websites, without storing your personal data.

  • Primary DNS: 9.9.9.9
  • Secondary DNS: 149.112.112.112

There is also a Quad 9 IPv6 DNS server:

  • Primary DNS: 2620: fe :: fe
  • Secondary DNS: 2620: fe :: 9

Quad9 does not filter content – only domains that are phishing or contain malware will be blocked. Quad9 also has IPv4 public DNS that is not secure 9.9.9.10 (2620: fe :: 10 for IPv6).

3.OpenDNS

OpenDNS claims 100% reliability and uptime and OpenDNS is used by 90 million users worldwide. Offering two sets of free public DNS servers, one is only for parental control with dozens of filter options.

  • Main DNS: 208.67.222.222
  • Secondary DNS: 208.67.220.220

IPv6 addresses are also available:

  • DNS Primary: 2620:119:35::35
  • Secondary DNS: 2620:119:53::53

The server above is for OpenDNS Home, where you can create a user account to set up specific settings. The company also offers DNS servers that family friendly, this DNS will block adult content, called OpenDNS FamilyShield: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123 (shown here). Premium DNS offers are also available, called OpenDNS Home VIP.

4.CloudFlare

Cloudflare builds 1.1.1.1 to become the “fastest DNS server service in the world” and will never record your IP address, never sell your data, and never use your data to target ads.

  • Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1
  • Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.1

They also have an IPv6 public DNS server:

  • Main DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700 :: 1111
  • Secondary DNS: 2606: 4700: 4700 :: 1001

There is an application 1.1.1.1 for Android and iOS for quick settings on your mobile device.

5.CleanBrowsing

CleanBrowsing has three choices of free public DNS servers: security filters, adult filters, and family filters. This is a DNS server for security filters, the most basic of which is updating three hours to block malware and phishing sites:

  • Main DNS: 185.228.168.9
  • Secondary DNS: 185.28.169.9

IPv6 is also supported:

  • Primary DNS: 2a0d:2a00:1::2
  • Secondary DNS: 2a0d:2a00:2::2

6.Verisign

Verisign’s public DNS service offers stability and security with 100% up-time, and privacy, arguing that they “will not sell your public DNS data to third parties or direct your requests to display any ads to you.”

  • Main DNS: 64.6.64.6
  • Secondary DNS: 64.6.65.6

Verisign also offers IPv6 public DNS servers:

  • Main DNS: 2620: 74: 1b :: 1: 1
  • Secondary DNS: 2620: 74: 1c :: 2: 2.

There is a DNS Cache Check page on the Verisign website that you can use to check the status of the current public DNS, as well as the option to clear the cache of public DNS.

7.Alternate DNS

Alternate DNS is a free public DNS service that blocks ads before reaching your network.

  • Primary DNS: 198.101.242.72
  • Secondary DNS: 23.253.163.53

You can register for free from the registration page. There is also a choice of Family DNS Premium for $ 2 / month that blocks adult content.

8.DNS AdGuard

AdGuard DNS has the two fastest sets of DNS servers, both of which block advertisements in games, videos, applications and web pages. The basic DNS server device is called the “Default” server, and blocks not only advertisements but also malware and phishing websites:

  • Main DNS: 176.103.130.130
  • Secondary DNS: 176.103.130.131

IPv6 is also supported:

  • Main DNS: 2a00: 5a60 :: ad1: 0ff
  • Secondary DNS: 2a00: 5a60 :: ad2: 0ff

There is also a “Family Protection” server (176.103.130.132 & 176.103.130.134) that blocks adult content plus everything included on the “Default” server.

9.Comodo Secure DNS

Comodo Group is the company that built Comodo Secure DNS; Comodo is already well-known in computer and internet security products.

As you would expect, Comodo Secure DNS has a strong focus on security. It not only blocks phishing sites, but also warns you if you try to visit sites with malware, spyware, even parked domains that might burden you with advertisements (pop-ups, pop-unders, and more). Next, you can try the Comodo Dome Shield service, which adds additional features to Comodo Secure DNS.

Performance is key, of course, and companies recommend server networks around the world and smart routing technology to benefit. Comodo DNSPerf statistics are less impressive, DNSPerf reports that the average request time is around 72ms.
