GoPro Hero 7 Review – GoPro released three new GoPro products in 2018; it is GoPro Hero 7 Black, Silver, and White. Apart from differences in colour and specifications, the most noticeable difference is only the GoPro Hero 7 Black which has a screen in front of the camera. This Go Pro Black Edition is the top class Action Camera, the most expensive and most complete feature, the GoPro Hero 7 Black body is black, not grey. If we look at GoPro Hero Black 6 or 5 Black edition, it’s the colour like grey (grey).
We will see the new features of the GoPro Hero 7 Black:
- HyperSmooth stabilization (reduces the effects of shocks on the video, does it make it unnecessary to wear dreadlocks again?)
- Image quality improvement becomes max 4K / 60fps (with Hypersmooth), previously 4K / 30fps.
- Added choice of video resolution quality (1440p / 120fps, 960p / 240fps, 960p / 120fps, 720p / 240fps).
- TimeWarp which is HyperSmooth on timelapse video, speed increases to 30x. Make a smooth timelapse, even though recording while moving.
- Additional memory processing (not storage) to 2GB. This improves video processing capabilities for the better.
- Portrait mode for video/photo and also front and rear camera menu navigation.
- More intuitive menu and navigation.
- Enhanced microphone capability for better sound recording.
- Superphoto feature when taking pictures (naming for better HDR photo quality).
- Live streaming feature via WiFi to Facebook Live, Youtube, and several other platforms.
- Slow motion feature when previewing videos on the camera.
- Speed, map, location, and data from GPS can be directly made on smartphones without having to use a desktop.
- The white balance automatically detects the condition and atmosphere of shooting.
The GoPro Hero 7 Black has a size (6.2 x 3.2 x 4.5 cm) is also slightly smaller than the GoPro Hero 6 Black (6.5 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm). The quality of the camera body, rubber and grip are the same as Hero 6. The camera has two slots for the battery/memory card and USB-C / HDMI port. The slot was locked tightly because it was designed to be waterproof. GoPro itself can be waterproof (waterproof) to a depth of 10 meters (without housing). Batteries and accessories, all compatible with GoPro Hero 5 and 6. GoPro Hero 7 can accept memory cards up to 256GB capacity.
The ability of the battery on this camera, in testing to record video with the highest setting of 4K / 60 fps, can last up to 68 minutes.
The touchscreen display on this camera is still the same as Hero 6, still experiencing a bit of lag, not as responsive as the touchscreen on the iPhone, for example, due to the speed of the processor. GoPro Hero 7 updates the UI (User Interface) or menu navigation, making it simpler and easier to move pages. GoPro Hero 7 also supports portrait menus.
In general, the menu is divided into 3: Timelapse, Video, and Photo can be moved via the touchscreen or the menu button on the side. Voice commands or voice commands, for if we are in a position that does not allow to press a button or remote, can use voice to take pictures or start to stop recording videos. GoPro can respond to many voice commands, and GoPro Hero 7 adds “GoPro Capture” and “GoPro Stop Capture” voice commands, to start and stop shooting or video, depending on what mode we used
This is the most reliable feature (only in the GoPro Hero 7 Black, GoPro White and Silver only have an ordinary stabilization system). GoPro said hypersmooth, camera affiliation would be like stabilization like dreadlocks. Itself is a stick to reduce vibration on the camera, which will hold the camera in position even though the stick sways or moves position.
Hypersmooth on GoPro is processed through a better software algorithm, and adding processing memory to 2 Gb, resulting in smoother and more stable images and videos. So it’s not because of the addition of new hardware. Hypersmooth options can be turned on or off manually. The hypersmooth feature is also limited to 120 fps; when we have selected fps above 120, the hypersmooth cannot be activated.
The result? Not as complex as GoPro says. The quality of images and videos on the GoPro Hero 7 Black is indeed better than before.
Even though it has a 12MP output, it is using the same GP1 processor and the same lens as the Go Pro previous version, but the result that the GoPro Hero 7 Black produces far better quality images and videos.
Action cameras are almost always used to record moving a fast object, so the effects of shocks and moving cameras most affect the quality of images and videos. Thanks to The hypersmooth feature on the GoPro Hero 7 plus processing memory upgrades and the software algorithm makes better and better quality images result. I often ask, why should I use GoPro if my smartphone camera is good? GoPro Hero 7 is ready to beat all smartphone cameras to record our adventures.
In the previous GoPro Hero, there was a feature called high dynamic range (HDR) – when we take a photo, this feature saves the photo with several different colour and brightness settings, combines and processes it, and looks for combined compositions for the best results. But not always good, sometimes we have to turn off this feature because the output image of this feature looks weird.
GoPro Hero 7 Black introduces Superphoto. Smarter image processing methods, it can be automatic to choose between High Dynamic Range (HDR), Local Tone Mapping, Multi-Frame Noise Reduction, or No Processing, to produce the best images. The camera will analyze images, face and smile, light intensity, and choose which processing method is better or no processing at all. The results image are quite satisfactory; in dark conditions, the image is more visible.
As a result of this automatic processing, If we take photos in Superphoto mode, it needs to pause some seconds before we take the next photo. This Superphoto setting does not apply if we choose the RAW image format or use the protune feature.
Many people close the GoPro microphone with a cloth to remove crackle-cracking sounds when running or cycling. The microphone is now covered by a waterproof membrane too, to reduce sound distortion, especially wind. So that the video quality will not decrease due to sound distortion. The use of an external microphone is also still possible if we don’t mind carrying a mic that is sometimes bigger than the camera.
Go Pro Hero 7 Live Streaming
Now we can live streaming directly from the GoPro camera, this feature that many GoPro users have been asking for a long time ago. The method is also very easy, just connect to the wifi or personal hotspot from the smartphone, then log into the streaming platform, and we have livestreaming. Now we can stream the action from the bicycle or while running, or the drone directly to the web. Some platforms that support GoPro livestreaming are Facebook, Workplace by Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo. GoPro promised to expand the Livestreaming network to other platforms such as Instagram, QQ and others.
Videos that can be streamed are limited to 720p, but a lower setting can be chosen to reduce bandwidth on a slow internet connection. Moreover, from the results that were tried, there was a delay of around 5-10 seconds between the actual and what was seen on livestream.
Without a doubt, the GoPro Hero 7 Black is the best GoPro camera at the moment. With the same price as the previous Hero 6 black, as well as the addition of new features, the GoPro Hero 7 Black is suitable for people who want to record their adventurous actions. Then what about those who already have GoPro Hero 5 or 6?
For GoPro Hero 5, image quality enhancements and additional features are quite significant, so it’s time to upgrade the action camera to Hero 7 Black.
As for GoPro Hero 6, it is important to consider how often and how much it is used in what mode. If most record in 1080p mode, not too noticeable increase to 4K / 60fps, although Hypersmooth can increase 1080p video mode too. Sound quality can be tricked by the addition of accessories to Hero 6. Image quality improvement is indeed quite a lot from Hero 6 to Hero7, but how often we take pictures, and also with image processing using software or applications that can improve image quality without changing camera.
